Why Being a Feminist Matters

Feminist is a coined word, coming from the term ‘womanist’. Feminists believe in a equality, every human being treated the same no matter what gender! Feminists are not man-haters, troublemakers, rebels or any other term which may be offensive. Females are just as important as males and it is important we recognise that before we cave under society’s rules.

Being a feminist doesn’t mean making your girlfriend pay the entire bill, instead try splitting it equally. It also doesn’t mean slamming the door in their face. Just because ‘ladies first’ may be an unwritten rule which seems to indicate weakness in women, doesn’t mean you can completely lose all of your manners! Instead of being uncivil, simply say ‘after you’ or hold the door without any comments. Actions instead of Words, my friends!

I will leave you now with this great speech to inspire you to persevere with feminism or simply become a womanist if you are not already!

“Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties. Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions, for safety in the streets, for child care, for social welfare, for rape crisis centres, women’s refuges, reforms in the law. If someone says, ‘Oh, I’m not a feminist’, I ask, ‘Why? What’s your problem? ”

I personally love this quote and I hope you do too.
